Agree. Would love us to do that but our squad lacks a few players ( especially central midfield) to make that possible.

Lets just hope the effort and intensity ( aka performance) is there as on Monday even though quality may be in short supply.

"going places like this and playing them off the park"

Haven't done that for a long time and I don't suppose it will happen on Saturday. If we do win it will be scrappy at best!

Re: WHU team Vs WBA?
Teams like WBA don't like games were the opponent plays quick attacking football on the floor.

If we start going long ball and turn it into an ugly, physical direct match they will win as that's their bag.

I fucking hate them as a club. They make me sick. I find nothing more satisfying than going places like this and playing them off the park.

Re: WHU team Vs WBA?
So long as we play it forward quickly out of defence rather than pissing about with the ball (& giving it away) in our own half, we've got a good chance

Lovely brief post Sir Alf and lovely lack of pessimism too.

Re: WHU team Vs WBA?
WBA have tended to cope well with the direct balls over the top. We have to be able to play in different ways and I like the idea of starting with Hernandez and Sakho or Hernandez and Arnie and bringing Carroll on as an option.

Of the many things West Ham wise that fucked me off last season, getting 1 out of 6 points and conceding 6 goals against West Brom was near the top.
Don't care how low your expectations are we have to be better than that

AC upfront means log ball tactics.

Ludo very good point

Do we think Chico and Carroll in a 4-4-2 would work ?

Re: WHU team Vs WBA?
We look like a much better side, most of the time, with Carroll on the pitch.

You could also argue the opposite.... let Carroll wear them out with a real physical challenge and then bring on Hernandez and Sakho to run them ragged.

Is Tony Pulis the future of West Brom rr, are you going to do a Stoke and realise he is a footballing dinosaur, then shift him onto us?

Re: WHU team Vs WBA?
keeping a winning team is a bit old hat isn't it

think you set up depending on who you're playing?

the question is do we have more chance of winning starting Carroll or not

it seemed to work well bringing him from the bench the season before last and west brom are a big physical lot so not sure their centre halfs would enjoy chasing chico

Re: WHU team Vs WBA?
Infidel, lobbing Hail Marys out of our half into the opposition's half hoping for Carroll to win the challenge is patently hoofball when done repetitvely.

If it was hoofball under BFS then it is hoofball under whatever manager employs the tactic.

Comma

You're moving the goalposts.

The argument wasn't about whether it's better to play the ball through the midfield than play it long to AC. That's a completely different subject.

The argument was about whether playing long passes up to AC is a throwback to the days of hoofball under BFS.

As you've given up trying to defend your point I guess the argument is over.

Re: WHU team Vs WBA?
Infidel, so because I have a different opinion to you I'm wrong about the way we played. Look I think that on Monday we played to a relative strength of ours but against WBA to play the same way again is playing to a strength of theirs, ergo it won't work.

Countless times on Monday night balls were put up the pitch from our back three for Carroll to win the heading challenge. This effectively is putting our possession into a 50/50 chance of retention. OK against Huddersfield and silly to do too often against WBA. So instead of punting it over our midfield to Carroll, with a good chance of losing possession, I want to see more balls played rapidly through to the likes of Hernandez and Sakho or Antonio.

I believe he is expected to train late this week, early next, and could potentially be available form the bench for Spurs, but likely Swansea.
